Awards Recipients to be Honored

The Board of the North Carolina Art Education Association (NCAEA) met Saturday, September 27, 2008 and finalized the awards program for the 2008-09 school-year. We congratulate our “Art Stars” as exemplary art educators and advocates in their fields and will celebrate their accomplishments during the NCAEA Professional Development Conference. The awards luncheon begins at 11:30am on Friday, November 7, 2008 at the Renaissance Hotel in Asheville, North Carolina. Our Hearts Go Out

We regret to inform you of the passing this weekend of our dear friend, Spencer Crawford, art instructor and husband of our NCAEA President, Karen Canfield. Spencer had struggled with heart issues for years, and his heart gave out on him on the morning of Sunday, August 3.

The family has requested that a Memorial Service be held at Asheville School’s Boyd Chapel after the students return later this month. The service is scheduled for August 31st at 5:00 p.m. Please keep his family in your thoughts and prayers. Notes of condolences may be sent to Karen and family at:

Karen and Spencer have two children, Sean and Erin, at home and both parents were making their living as teachers. The next few weeks will certainly be difficult with unforeseen expenses associated with these circumstances. Anyone wishing to help can send donations to Mark Sidelnick, NCAEA Treasurer, 18 Stephanie Lane, Asheville, NC 28805. Indicate that the donation is for Spencer Crawford.

The NCAEA is also working with the Asheville School, where Spencer taught, to create a scholarship fund. Although they have not worked out the details of the fund (scholarship fund for students interested in art, support for the Art program…), they will be notifying the family of contributions received. At an appropriate time, they will discuss with Karen how to best use those funds to honor Spencer and his service to Asheville School, his students, and the Arts.

Those wishing to honor Spencer in this way may send checks payable to Asheville School (please reference Spencer Crawford) to the Asheville School Development Office; 360 Asheville School Rd; Asheville, NC 28806 or make a gift online at www.ashevilleschool.org. They will also be putting together a way for alumni and friends to share their feelings and remembrances on their website in the next couple of days, so please check for that soon.

Spencer Crawford will be greatly missed by his family, students, colleagues, and his art family.

New Issue of By Design is Available

The newest issue of By Design is now available. In addition to the division and region reports, you can see photos from and read all about the NAEA conference in New Orleans. This issue can be downloaded as a PDF HERE. It is a large file so could take a minute or 2 to download.

By Design is needing submissions for the Fall issue. The deadline is July 15. Submissions and questions should be e-mailed to editor, Danny Hartman.

NC General Assembly Youth Art Exhibit

The North Carolina General Assembly Youth Art Exhibit is cosponsored by the NC Art Education Association and North Carolina General Assembly. The purpose of the exhibit is to share with our legislators and the public the exceptional creative ability of North Carolina’s students. The 2008 NC General Assembly Youth Art Exhibit was second year of this exhibition and we hope to make it a long tradition to advocate for art in our schools. On May 19, 2008, students, their families, and their art teacher were honored during a reception at the NC General Assembly. Many NC Representatives and Senators were in attendance. Congratulations to the following students and art teachers who are part of this year’s exhibit:

The exhibit will be in the lobby of the N. C. General Assembly from now until late January 2009 when it will be returned to the regional chair to return to each art teacher.

All NCAEA members are invited to submit artwork for the 2009 NC General Assembly Youth Art Exhibit. All artwork must fit in a 16” x 20” frame. Any artwork smaller than 16″ x 20″ should be mounted on constructed paper or matted to fit a 16” x20” frame. The frame will be provided by the NC General Assembly for the duration of the exhibit. Artwork can be submitted to your regional chair to be juried to represent the region anytime between the NCAEA Fall Staff Development Conference in November and January 12, 2009. The North Carolina Art Education Association is conducting a survey of ALL of the North Carolina visual arts educators to learn more about what you think we do well, what we could do better, and what you would like to see in this state professional organization.
